My favourite thing about my dads side of the family get togethers is when someone brakes out the guitar and we start singing. Half of the children's or "primary"(I believe it was Uncle Randy who actually thought Cousins was in the children's song book) songs we learned growing up were written by Gram Olsen. I have always Loved to sing!
With that being said here comes my deep dark secret. Ready... I cant read music...Oh the shame!!!
Thinking of all the choirs, all those YEARS of playing Trombone in band (Don't tell Jerry), and I still can't for the life of me read music. I am pretty good at faking it though, I gotta admit that is a skill I honed pretty well Leaching off others ability to actually know where to start. Once I have heard it a few times I can follow along with the notes on the page. But I still don't know what they are called or if I am actually hitting the right pitch and all that.
So what is the purpose, you may be asking, of bringing up all these repressed feelings of inadequacy... well for the first time in a LONG time, I think since I was pregnant with Izaac. I was asked to sing in front of people... no not by myself, what are you crazy??? For the Relief Society birthday party this year I got to sing in a Quintet... Is that actually something??? Well there were five of us anyway, I guess a mini choir:)
We sang a song by Sally DeFord, Lift up your heart... It was a really beautiful song and Natalie, as ambitious as she is, had us sing a SSA version of the song. Probably not a big deal for most but I really think this is the first time I have ever sung second soprano. It's HARD... at least it was for me, I was so scared and had a terrible time finding my notes... meaning coping Aleisha, Who thankfully was singing my part with me, because as previously indicated I have a lack there of. Thankfully after practicing with the piano music Tanya let me record. I could fake my way through it.
It was a lot of fun to sing again,,, not just for Justice and my kids in my house, car, park or
random grocery store.
So anyone out there although I may be inept at actually reading the notes, I love to sing and love
opportunities to do so.
I recorded our song but I can't figure out how to put it on here so just imagine what it sounded like
... We were pretty good eh! :)
